TECHNIQUES FOR SUCCESSFUL FLOOR DISINFECTION





Procedures:

I. Spray Down/Mop Up Method
A. Among the best for bacterial control.
1. Disinfectant solution never gets dirty or overloaded prior to going on the floor.
B. Technique (Put on personal protective equipment).
1. Remove dust and loose dirt by dust mopping floor.
2. Using a pump up sprayer, spray a solution of disinfectant cleaner on the floor to be disinfected.
a. Allow to remain wet on floor for 10 minutes contact time for complete disinfection.
b. Mop up solution with a clean mop and a bucket with wringer filled with clean water.
II. Double Bucket Method
A. Next most effective method for disinfection
1. Use one bucket for disinfectant solution, second for clear water rinse.
B. Technique
1. Dust mop the area first using a clean mop.
2. Spread disinfectant liberally over floor with mop.
3. Allow contact time of 10 minutes.
4. Pick up solution with mop.
5. Rinse the mop in the rinse water bucket and wring mop well.
a. Releases dirt into rinse water, out of mop head.
b. Keeps disinfectant solution from becoming overloaded and ineffective too soon.
C. Suitable in high and intermediate priority areas
1. Operating rooms, isolation and high risk patient care
III. Single Bucket Method
A. Provides adequate cleaning in medium priority areas.
1. Less cumbersome method
2. Disinfectant solution carries all dirt and bacteria and must be changed frequently.
3. When solution becomes overloaded with soil, may spread more germs than it kills.
B. Technique
1. Dust mop floor prior to mopping.
2. Apply disinfectant solution to floor from mop bucket.
3. Allow 10 minute contact time.
4. Pick up solution with mop, rinsing mop in disinfectant solution.
5. Repeat until floor is cleaned.
6. Must monitor solutions cleanliness. Change solution when visibly soiled.
C. Suitable for use in office space, public areas and low risk patient rooms, if applied properly.
IV. Automatic Scrubber
A. Automatic scrubber with wet vac pickup and good disinfectant cleaner can produce very high degree of cleaning and disinfecting.
l. Works well on quarry tile and other areas with recessed grouting.
2. May be used in operating room, taking care to assure wheels, squeegee, etc. are clean.
