INCONTINENT PATIENT ROOMS EXTRA PROCEDURES
Tools & Materials Needed:
A. Regular room cleaning tools and materials
B. Biohazard bags
C. Personal protective equipment
Procedures:
I. Purpose of Extra Procedures for Incontinent Patients
A. Sanitation and safety
B. Odor control
II. Procedures for Bed and Bedding
A. Put on gloves and proper personal protection equipment.
B. Remove gross fecal matter and place in a closed bag, treating as infectious waste.
1. If blood is visually present or expected, observe procedures for the blood borne pathogen standard.
C. Fold bedding to cover contamination.
1. Do not allow bedding to wave in the air, possibly spreading bacteria.
D. Clean and disinfect the mattress padding and the mattress cover.
E. Weekly wipe down and disinfect the mattress, as well as the seams.
III. Extra Equipment in Room
A. Diaper container
1. Tie and remove the disposable liner bag.
2. Place into appropriate bag on cleaning cart.
3. Spray container inside and out with a cleaner disinfectant.
4. Wipe dry with a clean cloth.
5. Install new liner.
IV. Procedures for Odor Control
A. Spread of fecal material
1. Clean with a disinfectant anything the patient may have touched. These include:
a. Handrails
b. TV remote
c. Over bed table
d. Light switches
B. Hard floor care
1. Clean up gross contamination as soon as found.
a. Wear proper protective gear.
b. Clean and disinfect area with a neutral disinfectant.
2. Daily dust mop and damp mop entire floor using either the spray down/mop up method or the double bucket method.
C. Carpet care
1. Treat spots as soon as found.
a. Remove gross contamination.
b. Treat spot with a carpet sanitizer.
c. Extract or blot with a clean cloth.
2. Weekly carpet treatment
a. Pre-spray carpet with a sanitizer.
b. Extract using clear water only in the extractor.
